Eighteen restaurants, caterers and bakeries brought their A-game to Washington and Lee University last month for the 2nd annual “Souper Bowl” event benefiting the Campus Kitchen at Washington and Lee University (CKWL).
On Sunday, January 26th, community members and college students gathered in Evans Dining Hall to address childhood hunger in the area one soup sample at a time. Attracted by the aroma of over 23 delicious soup creations, taste testers wandered the row of restaurants to the melodies of three Washington and Lee acapella groups.
The event supported CKWL’s Backpack Program, which began in 2009 as a partnership between CKWL and nearby Natural Bridge Elementary School. Four years later, the program has expanded to serve all area elementary schools and Head Start programs, providing more than 600 children with a bag of non-perishable food items to take home each weekend. In fact, in the fall 2013 term alone, CKWL distributed 8,957 backpacks.
By the end of the day, the Souper Bowl raised more than $7,600, enough to fund roughly three months of the Backpack Program. Special thanks to the local restaurants, volunteers from Llylburn Downing Beta Club, and CKWL’s annual sponsor, Davidson & Garrard, who supported the event.
